For maintaining a slow over-rate against South Africa in the third and final ODI of the series in Cape Town on Sunday, India was fined 40% of their match money. At the Newlands Cricket Ground, India was knocked out for 283 in 49.2 overs while chasing 288 to give South Africa a 3-0 series win.
"After time allowances were taken into account, Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sentence after KL Rahul's team was ruled to be two overs short of the target," the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement.
Players are penalized 20% of their match fee for each over their team fails to bowl in the permitted time, according to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Staff, which deals with minimum over-rate offenses.
There was no need for a formal hearing because Rahul pleaded confessed to the crime and accepted the recommended punishment. The charge was leveled by on-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Bongani Jele, third umpire Allauhudien Palekar, and fourth umpire Adrien Holdstock.
