When Australia gets on the field against Sri Lanka in the series' first T20I match on Friday, they will have two new openers.
Josh Inglis will make his international debut at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday, according to captain Aaron Finch. He will open with Ben McDermott. Finch will drop to No 3 as McDermott, the leading run-scorer in the 11th season of the BBL, replacing David Warner at the top, and Inglis replaces Mitchell Marsh of the Perth Scorchers.
According to a report, Marsh and Warner have been rested for the series, while Travis Head will be out for the first three games due to his Premier Shield commitments with South Australia.
The only two changes in the playing eleven that won the T20 World Cup in Dubai in November are Inglis and McDermott.
With Inglis just participating as a batsman, veteran Matthew Wade will continue to keep wickets in the T20 side.
After shining in the World Cup semi-final, Finch highlighted that Matthew Wade remains the team's first-choice wicketkeeper, with him and Marcus Stoinis "almost winning a close game off their own bats," according to the report.
On the evening of the series opener, Finch informed reporters, "Wadey's the goalie, he performed a fantastic job throughout the World Cup."
"We see that as his role going forward, really trying to pin down that No. 7 role."
Following the success of Hobart Hurricanes player David Warner in the BBL, Finch believes McDermott has a chance to show why he should be a long-term T20 opening replacement to him and Warner.
"Ben McDermott has been in great form, so getting him at the top of the order was really important for us," Finch said.
"Josh Inglis, on the other hand, has been shifted around a bit in the order.
"(His selection) shows not only how well he's performed in recent years, but also how important he was to the group at the T20 World Cup.
