At the Auckland Classic on Thursday, Coco Gauff advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open with a decisive 6-3, 6-0 victory over Brenda Fruhvirtova, a rising star from the Czech Republic.
US Open winner Gauff struggled early in the match, dropping her first set and needing to save two break points in her third, but after that, the 19-year-old showed she was unbeatable in the battle of the teenagers.
In the second set of a match that lasted seventy minutes, 16-year-old qualifier Fruhvirtova, who had defeated world no. 48 Anna Blinkova in the opening round, managed just ten points.
"She started off playing very well and I was able to raise my level. I thought I served well and I did better on the returns," said Gauff, who sent down five aces.
The American will next play eighth seed Varvara Gracheva, the world number 42.
