On Wednesday at the Australian Open, US Open champion Coco Gauff defeated fellow American Caroline Dolehide 7-6 (7/2) and 6-2 to advance to the third round.
On Margaret Court Arena, the fourth seed jumped out to an early 4-1 lead before her opponent, who was ranked lower, rallied. Nonetheless, Gauff prevailed 7-2 in the tie-break with comparatively little difficulty. Serve was maintained throughout the second set until Gauff broke in the sixth game. To seal the victory, she pulled off the same trick while saving several break points on her serve.
"I wasn't nervous today, I was just trying to play good tennis," said Gauff, 19.
"If you give her something short, she's going to punish you for it. So I think if I could go back, I would try to play more deeper, more heavy like I did in the second (set)."
She will play another American, Alycia Parks, in the third round.
