Australia maintained their control on the series by giving England a score of 468 runs and then eliminating four of England's top six batsmen, including Joe Root, late on the fourth day of the D/N Test in Adelaide.
Jhye Richardson hit first, hitting Haseeb Hameed with a powerful delivery from a good length. While Dawid Malan and Rory Burns took a stand for 19 overs, they both went soon after. Malan, who had been dropped at slip by Steve Smith off Nathan Lyon, was caught LBW by Michael Neser in the next over. Burns was also bowled by the same round-the-wicket angle, which sent Richardson to second slip.
Root was the final one to fall, pushing Mitchell Starc to the slip cordon. England had begun the day on a similar note, but their bowling had improved, and they had taken three quick wickets. After being down to 55/4 at one point, Australia fought back thanks to the fifties from Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne.
Jos Buttler caught one wicket with a superb diving catch. And he could have got one more when Steve Smith edged as well, but Buttler dropped him. Big next hit Smith's front pad, allowing Ben Stokes to request a review, but Smith was saved by the umpire's call for impact.
During that period of play, Smith and Labuschagne were kept quiet, but they stopped England from running through. Buttler returned the favor by completing a good catch after Smith gloved a short ball from Ollie Robinson down the fine leg.
Soon after trying to catch Robinson and being caught at the boundary by a diving Stokes, he was dismissed. In fact, Labuschagne had been very careful throughout his 96-ball innings. After being bowled on so many times, Labuschagne went on to score a fifty to add to his first-innings hundred.
Australia was on the search for quick runs at the time, with a declaration on the way. With Australia on the attack, Dawid Malan and Root both took two wickets before Smith declared for the second time in the match and saw his bowler’s impact entire England.
