Stefanos Tsitsipas began his Terra Wortmann Open campaign by defeating Gregoire Barrere in a fierce challenge. In Halle, the second seed defeated his French opponent 6-7(6), 6-4, and 7-6(3).
At 6-7(6), 1-3, Tsitsipas was down a set and a break, but he wore down Barrere to win in two hours and twenty-two minutes. The Greek has earned a second-round match against Nicolas Jarry at the grass-court ATP 500 by being the more consistent player in the second half of the match, particularly during the deciding-set tie-break.
Now 32-10 for the 2023 campaign, Tsitsipas is ranked No. 5 in the world. The 24-year-old, who advanced to the championship match at the Australian Open in January and in Barcelona in April, is vying for the year's first crown. On his two prior occasions in Halle, in 2018 and 2022, the Greek advanced to the second round.
