Wu Yibing hadn't participated in a game on grass since he was a junior before Tuesday afternoon in Stuttgart. It didn't stop the Chinese from recording an amazing debut victory at the BOSS Open, where he upset an exhausted Nick Kyrgios 7-5, 6-3 in the opening round of the ATP 250 competition in Germany.
Wu avoided a break point in the first game with a superb forehand on the move before breaking Kyrgios in the 12th game to take the opening set. The World No. 64's mobility became noticeably more constrained as he played. Wu completed his third Top 30 victory by taking the lone break in the second set.
Marton Fucsovics, a Hungarian qualifier who defeated Denis Shapovalov 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, will face Wu in the second round.
